SA Naval College

The South African Naval College, situated on the eastern side of Gordon's Bay harbour, is responsible for the education, training and development of all officer candidates (Midshipmen) in the South African Navy. Shipwrecks off the Blaauwberg Coast

Numerous shipwrecks lie off the Blaawberg coast.   These include the Reygersdal Wreck at Silwerstroom Strand, the SS Hermes Wreck, wrecked on Milnerton Beach - north of the lighthouse - on 12 May 1901, Nieuw Haarlem, near the Milnerton Lighthouse, Dutch oosterland Vessel shipwreck, the Winton near Milnerton and the Commandor Shipwreck, both found at the Milnerton Lagoon.

Silvermine Reserve

Silvermine has a large number of plant species, including indigenous trees, proteas, ericas and reeds. The larger part of the reserve lies to the east and includes Muizenberg and Kalk Bay mountains. Simon's Town Historic Mile

Traditionally, Simon's Town's, Historic Mile - twenty-one of the buildings in St George's Street are over 150 years old  is approached from the north west, for it was from this point that the town developed.

Simon's Town Museum

This building now housing the Museum, was built in 1777 as a residence for the Governor of the time and was subsequently utilised as a hospital, customs house, police station, post office and finally the Magistrate's Court and residence until the Museum was established. Simon's Town Waterfront

Site of the Battle of Blaauwberg

Blaauwberg derives its name from the battle of Blaauwberg which was fought in August 1806 .   The Blaauwberg Koppie, situated on the Melkbosch Farm, approximately in the center of the Municipal area, is where the Batavians were defeated by the British.   This is private property and not accessible to the public.

South African Museum

The South African Museum was founded in 1825 and is the oldest and largest museum in the country. The museum's exhibits include a fossil gallery which traces the evolution of life in the Karoo, a Whale Well dominated by a 20 m long skeleton of a blue whale, the only example of a quagga foal and the Linton rock paintings. Spook Hill

A visit to this spot often generates intense discussion on whether the fact that cars roll uphill here is an optical illusion or one of the world's great unsolved mysteries. It is found at the top of the Parel Vallei Road, right in front of Straightway Head Country House.

Table Mountain

A world heritage site, the summit of Cape Town's world-famous landmark is 1086 m above sea level. Visitors can reach the top by the new revolving cable car. There is a restaurant and souvenir shop on the summit. The mountain offers a number of walks and is covered with with wild flowers. The mountain is also the home of the famous silver tree.

The Design Museum

The Design Museum is a new addition to one of Cape Town's own warehouse districts in Green Point. Located in a turn-of-the-century foundry building, the Museum is the first of its kind in Africa and will play an important role in promoting local design and providing access to international work. Opening in September, it will showcase contemporary design of all kinds, including graphic, interior, architecture, jewelry, clothing, textile and product design. Temporary exhibitions will be shown throughout the year, while the Museum's permanent collection of contemporary furniture will be on view at selected intervals. A café, internet stations, a museum store and educational activities form part of the peripheral attractions.

The Lighthouse at Kommetjie

The Kommetjie Lighthouse at Slangkoppunt was built around 1914 and commissioned in 1919 to warn seafarers of the dangers of coming too close inshore. Electricity was introduced in 1936 and the light has a range of 33 sea miles.

The Sheikh Yusuf Shrine (Kramat)

A national monument in Khayelitsha and shrine of an Islamic pioneer, who came to South Africa as a slave and with him brought Islam to this part of the world, is situated in this vicinity.

The Steenbras Dam

The Dam is primarily a water source for the Cape Peninsula, although rough-and-ready accommodation facilities are available for those prepared to give up creature comforts. The waters are stocked annually with trout and fishing is permissible provided a permit is obtained. Birdlife is plentiful and hundreds of Egyptian geese nest on the shores and island of the upper dam. Adrenaline junkies from far and wide visit "Kamikaze Canyon" a gorge situated in the Steenbras River Valley. On offer are pool jumps from 6 to 30 metres high, as well as abseiling down a 60 m waterfall aptly named "Thunderfalls".

Tygerberg Nature Reserve

The 89ha reserve in the Tygerberg Hills is situated in the extremely endangered Renosterbos veld type. Hiking trails, named after animals, cover 7680 metres can be comfortably walked in 2 hours. Tygerberg Zoo

Visit the Tygerberg Zoo where you'll be able to see a collection of exotic animals, including tigers and monkeys. Our European Brown Bears are housed in the largest bear enclosure in Africa.

There are ponds with Swans, walk-through avairies, and free-flying birds, including the only breeding White Storks in Southern Africa. Tearoom, Farmyard, picnicking and souvenirs are available.

Vergelegen

Certainly one of the oldest grants in the Helderberg. Made to Governor Willem Adrian van der Stel in 1700, it measured 400morgen. Here he built the beautiful Vergelegen homestead. The homestead itself is not a national monument, but the five magnificent camphor trees planted in the front of the house by Van der Stel were proclaimed historical monuments in 1942. Vergelegen is owned by Anglo American and is open to the public for wine tasting, tours and lunches.

Built in 1860, and still a working harbour, the Victoria and Alfred has been developed into one of South Africa's biggest tourist attractions. Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's second son, tipped the rock signaling construction of the breakwater. Original buildings have been renovated and new ones built, all in Victorian style. There are museums, boat trips (inc the Penny Ferry), helicopter flips, pubs, a brewery, restaurants, cinemas (Imax cinema ? five storey, large screen) hotels, the Two Oceans Aquarium, an amphitheatre, craft markets, live music and a variety of entertainment.

Whale Watching

Each year Southern Right whales migrate into the coastal waters of the Cape Metropolitan Area  to calve and nurse their young. The animals, mere metres from the shore, provide unsurpassed whale watching opportunities between June and November. Humpbacks migrate through the region between May and December each year, while Bryde's whales are found slightly further offshore all year round.

A growing international interest in whale watching has led to increasing numbers of tourists visiting the region, boosting South Africa's tourist industry and contributing meaningfully to the development of the region.
