Helderberg Nature Reserve

This nature reserve is one of the treasures of the Helderberg region. It starts at the foothills of the Helderberg Mountain, where families picnic in the shade of ancient oaks amidst rolling lawns, and reaches up the mountainside to places where hardy fynbos plants cling to the steep slopes. An educational centre, funded jointly by the Friends of the Helderberg Nature Reserve and the Somerset West Municipality, is well utilised by local schools and organisations in the important task of educating both adults and children about conservation.

Birds are abundant in the reserve and over the years some 169 species have been recorded. A complete bird list and guide is available at the Maskew Miller Information Centre in the reserve. Several species of small antelope occur in the reserve and visitors may be privileged to spot Grey Duiker, Grysbok and Steenbok. Bontebok have also been reintroduced. Snakes are often seen but one may come across a mole snake, Cape Cobra of puff adder. Bear in mind that the last two are highly poisonous and should bee given a wide berth.
