The Department of Tourism has categorically denied an alleged fake news report that claims Minister Tokozile Xasa backs rhino poaching.
According to the Department, the story leads readers to believe that rhino poaching is justified in Xasa’s eyes.
It affirms, however that this is a blatant lie. “Minister Xasa cautions the public to be mindful of the proliferation of fake news websites and other platforms that peddle untruths intended to confuse and cause harm rather than inform the public,” it says.
“The Minister condemns rhino poaching as she does all other forms of animal cruelty. Rhinos are an important part of our national and cultural heritage and must be protected for the benefit of current and future generations.”
It adds that the Department of Environmental Affairs continues to successfully crack down on poachers. According to the DEA’s latest stats, rhino poaching is down from last year.
