Whale season has come early this year in the Western Cape, with several southern right whales showing up the False Bay area already.
Simon’s Town Boat Company posted pictures of the majestic marine mammals to its Facebook account earlier this month, saying the whales’ arrival “bodes well for a great season”.
The company has expressed its disbelief at the presence of the creatures so early in the year. Whale season traditionally starts in June, with prime time being anywhere between then and November.
Two of the visitors even made their way right into the town’s harbour, with a beautiful breaching and lobtailing display for their adoring fans.
Several species of the cetaceans can be viewed along much of the Western Cape’s coastline during whale season, with a few notable whale-watching locations including Hermanus, Walker Bay, De Hoop Nature Reserve, and Simon’s Town itself.
