Kalk Bay Reef, Cape Town, South Africa
In the winter the hardy faithful flock here to sample one of the most consistent left-breaking waves you're likely to find along this part of the coast. The spot is not bad in summer either, when big swells provide a stern test of surfing skills. It?s within smiling distance of the trendy Bass Bell Restaurant and Pub, making it a great spot for exhibitionists.

Outer Kom (and Inner Kom), Noordhoek, Cape Town, South Africa
When conditions are right, the waves at Outer Kom are big and awesome. Slightly inshore of the Outer Kom (or 'Outers' as its sometimes called) is Inner Kom, where the waves are smaller but faster.

Elandsbaai, South Africa
Perfection at Elandsbaai is a big swell, a pumping summer southeaster and a big, left point break. When these factors converge, word travels quickly, and hordes of Cape Town's surfing junkies head north up the West Coast.

Victoria Bay, near Wilderness, South Africa
This little Garden Route gem has a great right-point break, which is consistent for most of the year. However, it?s probably not a good idea to head this way during the peak season. At this time surfing is severely restricted because of tourists who descend on the area.

New Pier, Durban, South Africa
To hordes of boarders, Durban is known as Surf City, and at New Pier you'll find some great waves practically within the city limits. It?s also the venue for the Mr Price Pro surfing contest.

Bruce's Beauties, Cape St Francis, South Africa
Bruce's Beauties (the waves that featured in 1960s classic "The Endless Summer") for an exceptional right-break. Unfortunately, they don't work very often but they're worth waiting for.

Supertubes, Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa
When the spot known as Supertubes, is working ? with a big south swell and a light west wind ? stand by for the best-formed waves on the coast. This area has, however, become quite popular and crowded over the years.

Nahoon Reef, near East London, South Africa
Ask a surfing expert to name the most consistent Big Wave spot along the South African coast and chances are Nahoon Reef will come out near the top. The problem, however, is that its reputation has spread too far and wide. So be prepared to find it somewhat crowded.

Cape Cross, Namibia
In the winter, if you're lucky, you may be able to ride a left back here that'll carry you hundreds of metres (or even up a kilometre). Although it?s a great spot, it?s suitable only for dedicated surfers. There are no facilities ? not even fresh water ? and before you can start surfing you'll need to paddle far out to sea to avoid disturbing the huge seal colony near the shore.

St-Leu, Reunion
This is possibly the best surfing spot in the Indian Ocean islands, with its strength being a long, hollow, left-point coral-reef break. The break works best in winter with the southeast trade winds and a moderate to large southwest swell. For paddling out, there is a convenient rip, which is perfectly placed just in front of the campsite.
