Hottentots-Holland Hiking Trail, South Africa

While its proximity to Cape Town makes this 40-km trail popular, it?s not the only reason. The views over False Bay and, especially in spring, the vast expanses of honey-scented, brightly coloured fynbos, are also big attractions.

The Limietberg Trail, South Africa

Also conveniently close to Cape Town, this lovely 36-km trail is deservedly one of the most popular. The start and the end points are on two scenic mountain passes ? Du Toit?s Kloof ? so even driving there and back is a pleasure. Stunning views across farmland are a bonus.

Swellendam Hiking Trail, South Africa

There are several day routes along this trail. But trailists who prefer longer distances can walk the full 76-km circular route which takes six days. From the slopes of Langeberg Mountains you have views of the farming regions of the Western Cape on one side and the Little Karoo on the other.

Tsitsikama Hiking Trail, South Africa On it?s own, this is a 61-km hike taking five days. But it can be combined with the Otter Trail to make one, long, circular trail. The huts are comfortable and positioned in lovely spots. Early booking for this trail is essential.

Otter Trail, South Africa

This five-day trail between the Storm?s River Mouth and Nature?s Valley was the first to be marked out in South Africa, and is till probably the most popular by far. Stunning views of the coast, cliff-top scrub forest, ferns, fynbos and, in spring, brightly coloured flowers, make this a particularly scenic trail.

The Fanie Botha Trail, South Africa

This five-day trail, which links the high spots of the Mpumalanga highlands, takes hikers past some of the more popular view sites in the area, such as Mac Mac Falls and the Pinnacle. The trail ends at God?s Window, with its superb vista, which is also the starting point of the Blyderivierspoort Hiking Trail.

Blyderivierspoort Hiking Trail, South Africa

This 65-km trail cuts through grassveld, mist forest and riverine forest, in the Blyderiveirspoort Nature Reserve. Views of the fascinating Bourke?s Luck potholes, the peculiarly symmetrical hills known as the Three Rondavels, tumbling waterfalls and pools are other highlights. The five-day trail ends at the scenic Swadini Dam Resort in the north of the reserve.

Magoebaskloof Trail, South Africa

The Dokolewa and Grootbosch trails have been combined to create a trail through indigenous forest and pine plantations. Wander peacefully in the shade of ancient yellowwoods and other huge trees festooned with Old Man?s Beard, and at midday stop to take a quick dip in one of the many invitingly cool pools.

The Giant?s Cup Trail, South Africa

This trail is particularly popular introduction to the Drakensberg as it is relatively easy but extends over a satisfying five days. Mountain grasslands, dramatic cliffs, eroded rock formations and the vast blue from the perfect backdrop for a memorable excursion. Eland, baboon and birds such as the rare lamergeier may be seen.

The Fish River Canyon Trail, Namibia

The second-biggest canyon in the world is impressive at the best of times. Once you?re down there, you lose the sense of its magnitude but you gain a closer insight into the canyon. Reed-fringed pools mirror the towering rock walls and occasional break up as a fish surfaces or an Egyptian goose lands. This tough hike has a short season but it is always heavily booked.
