Suicide Gorge, Western Cape
Tackling this 18-km gorge on the Riviersonderend ought not to press you into contemplating the unthinkable. But be warned - once in, the only way you're going to get out is via some gravity-defying jumps and scrambles. The highest jump is about 10m.

Riviersonderend, Western Cape
If Suicide Gorge sounds too daunting a prospect, this gorge, lower down the same river, might be a better option. Nervous beginners can avoid most of the jumps or do them from a low spot.

Ratel River, Western Cape
At this scenic tributary of the Olifants in the Beaverlac Nature Reserve, kloofers have a little of everything - a range of jumps, long pools in which to land, beautiful waterfalls and potholes. Some sections can be done on a Lilo.

Steenbras River, Western Cape

This floating trail, which is regularly offered as an escorted trip, starts at the Old National Road Bridge and continues to the Storms River Mouth in the Tsitsikamma National Park. The attractions include rapids, a couple of jumps and a spectacular, narrow gorge at the end.

Tonquani, Magaliesberg, Gauteng
The clear, warm waters of the Magaliesberg make Tonquani a favourite among kloofers. The highest jump has an alternative scrambling route for those with no desire to defy gravity. However, adrenaline junkies can't stay away, and return time and again.

Blyde River, Mpumalanga
Although this is not strictly a kloofing spot, the hiking trails do cross some great pools and waterfalls in the river where you could jump if you wanted to. The Blyde River is famous for canyon scenery, potholes and waterfalls.

Sekororo, Olifants River, Mpumalanga
Long slides and a few spots that necessitate the assistance of ropes confirm that Sekororo should be attempted only by expert kloofers. Incredible scenery and pools in sylvan surroundings are a just reward for the hard work.

Ndedema Gorge, Drakensberg, Kwazulu-Natal
This northern Drakensberg gorge, with its lovely clear pools, is one of the few kloofs that can be done as an overnight trip. There are caves along the way, some of which have intriguing, fragile rock paintings, but it is illegal to shelter in them.

Mzimkhulu Pipeline, Drakensberg, Kwazulu-Natal
One of the lesser-known Drakensberg kloofs, the Pipeline is named after its most spectacular feature - a rocky tunnel. It's a must for serious kloofers.
