On Wednesday the 8th of July this year, South African solo-adventurer Riaan Manser became the first person to circumnavigate Madagascar’s 5000km coastline by kayak, alone and unaided. Riaan began his ‘around the outside’ adventure in August 2008.

Legendary adventure kayaker, Johan Loots, said of Manser’s Madagascar expedition that it should be counted as one of the great feats of human endurance and “should go down in the annals of adventure as one of the greatest of all time… the achievement is, quite frankly, nothing short of sensational.”

In 2005 Riaan completed a two-year, 37 000 kilometre journey to become the first person to cycle around the entire perimeter of the African continent. Comparing the two adventures Manser says, “kayaking Madagascar is exponentially more challenging, both mentally and physically, than Africa ever was.”

We chatted to the adventurer to find out what kept him going...
