While 1time aircraft languish on airport aprons around South Africa, good news for travelers hoping for affordable sun and sea is that a new low-cost airline will offer direct flights from Johannesburg to Zanzibar from 12 March.

Tour operator AfricaStay has signed a contract with Mango to operate chartered flights direct to the 'Spice Island' from next month.

The flights will depart Johannesburg on Tuesday mornings, returning the same day. A Boeing 737-800 aircraft will reportedly be used, allowing for up to 185 passengers.

Cobus Vermeulen, sales and marketing director for AfricaStay, told gravel industry publication Tourism Update that the flights would be well priced and would be cheaper than indirect services, and that it would be possible to book flights only. A Saturday-operated flight is also planned over December.
