Although African low-cost carrier Fastjet is still pursuing the launch of a domestic route network in South Africa, through the acquisition of defunct 1time airline, the carrier is also currently evaluating a regional service into Johannesburg from its first African hub in Tanzania.

The expanded network could also feature flights from Tanzania into Entebbe and Moroni in the Comoros Islands but a full-scale move into South Africa remains hinges on regulatory approval of Fastjet’s offer to purchase 1time.

The final barrier to entry is whether the Department of Transport is willing to bend on legislation mandating an airline operating domestic services is at least 75 percent South African owned and operated.
