Market research group New World Wealth has named what it says are the top five safest countries for women.
The ratings were compiled using various sources, including interviews with women who travel extensively, interviews with female aid workers and interviews with migration workers.
The group became interested in the idea of women's safety in various countries after many millionaires reported in the 2016 Wealth Migration Survey that the treatment of women was one of the factors which motivated migration.
But what does New World Wealth mean by safety? The study focuses on the safety of women from rape, assault, slavery and trafficking. It does not however take into account equal rights or gender equality.
The study also did not use statistics from reported cases of abuse against women due to the extremely low reporting rates in some countries.
So which country came out at the top of the list?
Australia was named the world's safest country for women by the group. According to New World Wealth, Australia has a strong sense of community and residents have a shared value system. The country also has effective law enforcement and social services to crack down on abuse against women.
New Zealand was named in second place due to its efficient police force and value system.
But what about Africa? The survey named Mauritius, Namibia and Botswana as the safest countries for women on the continent.
Meanwhile the safest country in the Middle East according to the company is Israel, while in Asia it's Sri Lanka and Japan.
However, the top five were dominated by Western countries.
The top five safest countries for women, according to NW Wealth, are:
2. New Zealand
4. United States
