"We've always maintained that The Boardwalk is for the people of Port Elizabeth. The opening of the festival retail shopping complex and the amphitheatre in December will provide ideal venues for showcasing the amazing musical and dramatic talent we have in the metropole," he says.
The Boardwalk is set to become a home from home for local and national musicians and groups from December 1, when a 750-seat amphitheatre opens.
First on stage will be a free children's programme in the morning. "While a full programme of entertainment has been scheduled for the month of December, opportunities exist within the greater boardwalk area and at the Amphitheatre for informal artists to display their talents," says Mr Van Eck.
The opening night at the Amphitheatre will rock to the music of Duck Chowles, who will be in Port Elizabeth with his band for one night to present "The Best of Duck Chowles". Chowles, who plays the hits of most of the Rock 'n Roll greats, is well known for shows like Sticky Fingers" and "Roll Over Beethoven".
"This is the calibre of performer we're giving local musicians the opportunity to be associated with. The amphitheatre is going to become the home to good family entertainment," continued Mr van Eck.
One of the first groups to benefit will be the Woodridge Steel Band, which will be performing at the amphitheatre on the afternoon of Friday, December 1.
Saturday afternoon sees the Port Alfred based Kowie River Jazz Band creating a mellow mood, while Icon will get the crowd on its feet in the evening. Sunday's programme includes a Country Music Special with stars like Lance James, Bobby Angel and Dennis East.
Local band Eminent Child will launch its new album at The Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World on Monday, December 4.
Any artists wanting to be considered for the informal portion of the December programme should contact Lauren Eden on (041) 581 0742.
