The Table Mountain Cableway will be closed for annual maintenance from Monday 23 July to Sunday 5 August.
The Cableway is required to do annual maintenance to meet the highest global cableway standards set by the Swiss Governing Body for Cableways (BAV). Some of the 2012 maintenance plans include repairs to the top station generator; servicing of the power lines, hydraulics, main drive motor and gearbox; and general maintenance and testing.
Visitors can take advantage of the Cableway specials that are on offer before and after the annual maintenance period. These include a free return ticket for adults on their birthday on presentation of a South African ID; and the Kidz Season special that offers two children under 18 years a free return trip if they are accompanied by a full paying adult (valid over weekends, public and school holidays until October 31, 2012).
Should your birthday fall within this closureperiod, you are entitled to redeem your complimentary birthday ride up the Cableway one week before (15 July – 22 July) or one week after (5 August – 12 August) annual maintenance.
Visitors to the Cableway should also note that the City of Cape Town, together with the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company and the Table Mountain National Park, will start work on a project on TafelbergRoad in July that will improve pedestrian safety in close proximity to the Lower Cableway Station. In addition, a dedicated shuttle bus stop and turning circle will be built on the Kloof Nek side of the Lower Cableway Station.
“We ask that visitors bear with us as maintenance will inevitably result in a certain amount of inconvenience to all users of Tafelberg Road,” added Lehmann. As work can only be done during quieter months, the first phase of the project will address only a relatively short length of the edge of Tafelberg Road. It is however anticipated that the City will continue this work to improve pedestrian safety along the full length of Tafelberg Road in a number of phases over the next few years.
The Cableway operates weather permitting. For information call (021) 424 8181 or visit www.tablemountain.net.
