A celebration of wine, food, adventure and music will take place from Friday October 9 to Sunday October 11 during the sixth annual Breedekloof Outdoor and Wine festival.

This fun-filled weekend will include events hosted at the wineries in the Rawsonville, Slanghoek, Goudini and Breede River areas, just a one-hour drive from Cape Town.

Besides being able to sip award winning wines, activities include live music, food and wine pairing, quad-biking, mountain-biking and fynbos hikes, as well as a tagged fishing contest and fun runs, trail runs and adventure challenges. Taste buds will be tantalised with a range of delights from Oysters to potjiekos, spitbraai and a skaapkop dinner.

Sports

Sporting activities have always been one of the main focuses of Breedekloof Outdoor and Wine and 2009 is no exception, with the annual 5km and 10km Deetlefs Night Run through the vineyards; and the “Mountain to Mountain” Slanghoek Mental Health Mountain Bike Classic 2009 over 15km, 30km or 60km hosted by Slanghoek Winery.

This year Gevonden also hosts a trail run presented by AALS, an outdoor and adventure expo, combat paintball in the Gevonden Bloekembos, kayak demonstrations, a fun quad bike course and a food demonstration for hikers. Jason’s Hill offers hiking trails suitable for beginner and experienced hikers.

The Merwida Tagged Fishing competition remains a favourite for the entire family, with great prizes to be won. Or enjoy a helicopter flip or hot-air ballooning at Lorraine Private Cellar. Daschbosch Cellar, part of uniWines, hosts archery and barrel racing as well as an Adventure Challenge which includes a 25km MTB ride and a water obstacle course – there is also a Family Race (3km off-road fun run, 10km MTB ride and water obstacle course).

Unusual activities include a six-a-side Cowcamp Cricket at Du Preez Estate, and a sheepdog performance at Botha Wine Cellar.

Live entertainment

Popular entertainer Nataniel gets the festival off to a great start with a special Nataniel Under the Tanks performance hosted by Seven Oaks and Waboomsrivier wineries on Thursday October 8. Lizz Meiring provides a bubbly atmosphere at a Vonkel Vrou breakfast at Botha Wine Cellar on the Friday morning.

Music lovers are spoilt for choice with rockers Zinkplaat and Koos Kombuis at Opstal Estate, Seven Oaks and Waboomsrivier host the Three Tenors Under the Tanks, Chris Swanepoel performs at Slanghoek Wine Cellar, Andries Vermeulen at Goudini Wines and Skoenveters at Badsberg Wine Cellar.

There are also open-air dances beneath the oak trees at The Dam Fine Café, Gevonden has a full line-up of live entertainers, while Botha Wine Cellar hosts Adult Children’s theatre and live music by Luhann.

Food

The Bergsig Bistro, Opstal Restaurant and the Bistro at Jason’s are formal restaurant options for visitors, but all participating wineries serve food during the festival — the highlights include Katinka van Niekerk’s popular food and wine pairings at Slanghoek Wine Cellar, while the crocodile spit-braai at Avondrood Private Vineyards attracts adventurous diners as does the skaapkop and Tripe dinner at Jason’s Hill, which is also hosting the Pure Boland Farm Market.

De Vette Mossel operates at Deetlefs Estate where you can eat as much seafood as you like, Goudini Wines hosts a 4X4 Farm Breakfast on the Mountain, Kirabo a Red-punch Brunch, Gevonden a potjiekos competition, Du Preez Estate a Tobasco Hot Spot with Oysters, Champagne-style wines and olives, and Daschbosch has a Smoothy bar.

Kids

The Breedekloof is a family destination and the festival promises plenty of healthy outdoor entertainment for younger visitors, including pony rides, farm animal petting and face painting.

The wineries all cater for the entire family and most have dedicated children’s entertainment under supervision, including a model aeroplane demonstration at Badsberg Wine Cellar.
