If the world has learned anything from the advent of viral videos, it’s that wild animals are not to be trifled with. Unfortunately, some tourists in Canada didn’t get the memo, leaving us with this gem of a wildlife encounter.
A young girl has been left in absolute shock after a massive male sea lion pulled her off a ledge and underwater at a dock near Vancouver.
The footage was captured by Michael Fujiwara, and has since been uploaded to youtube.
The child was rescued from the water by a man identified as her grandfather. Several people can be heard telling the girl to get away from the ledge in Chinese – but did she listen? Of course not.
Speaking to CBC News, marine biologist Prof Andrew Trites says that people are stupid not to treat wildlife with respect.
“The little girl has her back to the sea lion and it would appear that the sea lion sees part of her dress, thinks it’s food, reaches up, grabs at the food and pulls her in by the dress,” he says. “You keep your distance. Watch the animals, but let wildlife be wildlife.”
Our local Cape Fur seals aren’t known to attack people, but this video might just dissuade tourists from getting too close to the water at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town or uShaka in Durban!
