Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage has been left reeling after a horrifying attack on staff and two rhinos at its premises in KwaZulu-Natal.
According to the orphanage, armed poachers assaulted staff and poached two rhinos on Tuesday night.
Tragically, one of the rhinos was not killed instantly, but had to be euthanised the morning after.
Expressing frustration at the attack, volunteer Megan Richards has set up a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for the orphanage’s upkeep for an entire year.
Amazingly, the response to her plea has been overwhelming, and a whopping R535 000 has already been donated as of Friday morning.
“You have restored my faith in humanity with your support”, says Richards in response to the action. “At this rate we can help fund long-term protection!”
Thula Thula’s latest post on Thursday confirms that staff have remained steadfast in their commitment to the remaining animals.
“We are humbled by all the messages of support as well as donations that have been streaming in from all over the world,” it adds.
The orphanage is now planning security upgrades, while authorities investigate the harrowing incident.
