A South African tour guide has been appointed as the President of the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations in Tehran, Iran.
According to the GCIS, Alushca Ritchie is a Western Cape tour guide who is known as a wine specialist.
She has served as chair of the Cape Tourist Guides Association, a director of the Cape Town Tourism Board, and the Western Cape representative of the South African Travel Association.
“We are very proud of this global leadership achievement,” says Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom. “This presents another opportunity for us to elevate the status of the guiding profession and to acknowledge the important role that our tourist guides play in providing superb visitor experiences.”
The WFTGA is an NPO that is affiliated with the UN World Tourism Organisation. Ritchie will serve as its head for a period of two years.
“I look forward to representing all tourist guides on an international platform,” says Ritchie. “This will be a great opportunity to learn and to promote a sector which is very rarely recognised as a profession, although it is an integral component of the tourism value chain.”
