Working Adventures is a weekly series of work 'n travel talks in which we will provide you with info, tips and advice on how to travel affordably. Travel is one of life's best learning experiences and we hope to make it part of your world.
Did you know that you can spend up to four years in the UK earning pounds and travelling around Europe. This week, we talk about the UK working visa and how this can become a reality for you.
Please feel free to email us and let us know in which topics, specifically, you are interested. Also, we would love to hear all about your travel and working adventure experiences — where you went, who you met, what you did and what you learnt. |
By earning pounds, you will not just be able to support yourself during your stay in Britain and fund your travels across Europe, but you could also save some money to repay those student loans, buy a car when you return to South Africa, or fund your next adventure.
You can find a job anywhere in England, Wales or Scotland. The freedom of choice is yours. You can do anything you like — work in London for a while and then travel, then return to work and head off again for
another holiday. Perhaps you prefer not to tie yourself to any particular place, and work as you travel around Britain.
Work opportunities vary greatly and you could find yourself working in secretarial jobs, computer work, bar work, waitressing, sales agents or shop assistants. You will also have the support of exchange organisations in Britain for assistance in finding work, accommodation, and preparing yourself for a new kind of lifestyle and challenge.
The working holiday visa is granted for a period of up to two years, only once in your lifetime. It allows you to work for half the duration of your stay in Britain or approximately 25 hours a week.
The programme operates year round and is a great option to combine with another working adventure. For example, spend June to August on a Summer Camp in the USA, then work in Britain or Ireland to save some pounds and travel through Europe before you return to South Africa.
Or if a ski experience is more
appealing to you, then how about working on a Ski resort in the USA or Canada for a few months and stopover for a working holiday in London?
So, if the travel bug has bitten you, get going! The opportunities are endless!

Soon December will be here, exams will be over and the ski slopes of America will be calling — are you interested?
SASTS Working Adventures has created an amazing opportunity for young South Africans to work in America in practically any
field that they wish, during the holidays, for a period of three to four months from November/December. Whether you opt for the bright lights of New York and the freedom to travel and work where you want, or have the peace of mind of a pre-arranged job on a ski resort — the choice is yours!
If you're a fulltime tertiary student or recent graduate, aged 19 to 35 and want to earn dollars during your December vacation, then look out for SASTS Working Adventures on your campus in July/August. For those of you near Cape Town, don't miss the free info workshops over the holidays. Parents and friends are very welcome.
