The OPT (Overseas Practical Training) USA programme is an amazing opportunity for South Africans aged 19 or over to spend up to 18 months in the USA while receiving practical training at an appropriate host company or organisation.
The programme is designed to give participants skills and new knowledge, which can be put to use when he or she returns to South Africa. And no, you don’t need a Green card or EC passport to do this! Participants will receive a J1 Cultural Exchange visa, which is valid for the full duration of your Internship.
In SA there are now 2 possibilities - you can either find your own traineeship in the States or get a career related placement arranged for you before you depart SA. The only requirement is that your training must be directly related to your occupation or academic curriculum.
The primary objective of the training is to enhance the skills of the participants through participation in a structured training programme and to improve knowledge of American techniques, methodologies and expertise.
The areas of training include Management, Business, Commerce, Finance, IT, Social Science, Library Science and Health Related occupations.
Resource Management Services (RMS) - a human resource company, which is headquartered in Denver, Colorado is the certified alliance partner for SASTS - Working Adventures (the company that organises the OPT programme in South Africa).
RMS are tailored to source and attract the right talent, then match the applicant in a rewarding 12 to 18 month training programme with well established and well recognised small to large corporations in the USA.
OPT USA enables you to better understand American culture and society and to enhance American knowledge of your culture, skills and experiences, by
providing the opportunity for an open interchange of ideas between the trainee & your American counterparts.
While you receive valuable work-related training and build up knowledge and experience within your specific field, the sponsoring organisation also benefits from having a keen, well-educated and highly motivated SA intern as part of their organisation or company.
It is impossible to quantify the value of international travel, and especially working and living in another country. Not only does one gain invaluable work experience, make new friends and see some amazing places, but the experience also totally changes your worldview. This is exactly what our young people desperately need now and what this unique opportunity offers.
Several Cocktail Presentations on the OPT USA Programme are held at SASTS Working Adventures’ premises, 11 Bree Street, Cape Town and soon also in Johannesburg.
