Looking to book a bush escape this summer? You can't beat the Greater Kruger National Park for a bush holiday… try these four places to stay in the game-rich areas of the Central Kruger.

Toro Yaka Bush Lodge
Toro Yaka, which means 'My Dream' in Northern Sotho, is one-of-a-kind lodge situated in the unforgettably pristine bushveld of Balule; a 30 000-hectare nature conservancy in the Greater Kruger National Park area.

Set apart from other lodges, Toro Yaka has been designed for true bush elegance, and combines personal service with getting close to nature. The six air-conditioned, private en-suite double rooms ensure tranquillity and comfort at all times. The cuisine is a fusion of European and traditional African, prepared mostly outdoors over an open fire.

Animals can be viewed at the water hole from the swimming pool deck, and there is an abundance of bird life in and around the lodge. Bush activities are accompanied by a professional field guide. The Olifants River — which flows all year-round through Balule — is home to crocodiles and hippos. The lodge is only an hour’s drive from two of the main gates to the Kruger National Park. Other attractions in the area include a wildlife rehabilitation centre, a cheetah project, and the Hans Merensky golf club.

Mohlabetsi Safari Lodge
Set in the vast Balule Nature Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger National Park, Mohlabetsi is home to a superb variety of fauna and flora, including the legendary Big Five. Tony, Alma and their colleagues warmly welcome guests to their relaxing and friendly oasis in the bush, where guides bring guests up close to nature on game drives and foot safaris and their experience and enthusiasm make these trips unforgettable.

Comfortable thatched rondavels, with al fresco showers, are decorated in an African theme. Unwind during the heat of the day around a sparkling pool or in the shade of the lapa, under giant acacia trees. Traditional songs and dancing by African ladies herald romantic dinners under the stars, often punctuated by the roaring of lions and the whooping of hyenas. Enjoy the cosy atmosphere of the boma, dining around a campfire or, on warmer nights, out on the open plain in front of the Lodge. The Lodge is easily accessible by road or by daily flights from Johannesburg.

Kruger’s Private Bush Camps
Kakuli Kruger’s Private Bush Camps are located in the exclusive Timbavati and Klaserie private game reserves, which are part of the Greater Kruger National Park. Situated on riverbeds, surrounded by Leadwood, Mopane and Acacia trees or shaded by huge Jackalberry trees, these authentic, unfenced eight-bedded tented camps have a real African charm with that true wilderness feeling.

With a focus on experience rather than luxury the maximum of eight guests sleep 'safari style' under canvas in twin-bedded Meru-style tents, with linen and towels provided. Hot showers and flush toilets are separate, but closely situated between the tents, so easily accessible to all the guests.

Bush walks and game drives accompanied by an experienced and knowledgeable guide, are offered early in the morning, late in the afternoon and at night. The camps have no electricity, but there is solar lighting in the tents, bathrooms, kitchen and dining areas and there are candles, paraffin lanterns and a camp fire to guide you around at night.

Due to the remoteness of the camps and exclusivity of the areas, and to enhance quality game sightings, the minimum stay required is three nights. Packages are available from Friday-Monday (three nights) or Monday-Friday (four nights). A shuttle service from Johannesburg is available every Monday and Friday.
