Visitors to hotels, guesthouses and lodges across the country will be in for a surprise the next time they check in, with the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa phasing in a new type of grading plaque.
Whereas in the past, plaques have been made from metal, newly-awarded ratings will be displayed on clear Perspex.
The move has come in response to the widespread theft of metal plaques. Furthermore, an establishment’s star grading will now be displayed in full colour, after concerns were raised that the previous black stars were simply not legible enough.
The TGCSA is South Africa’s only quality assurance organisation for accommodation, grading establishments between one and five stars depending on a number of factors, including level of luxury, facilities and service.
